Role of Certificate Authority in SSL Industry:-
A Certificate Authority is a third party organization that issues and manages security credentials and public keys for information encryption. As part of a public key infrastructure, a CA checks with a registration authority to verify information provided by the requestor of a digital certificate. If the Registration Authority verifies the requestor’s information, the CA can then issue a certificate. As per PKI implementation, the certificate holds the owner’s public key, validity, the name of owner and other information about the owner.
Website having certificate it does not mean it is trustworthy. Any website can provide its own certificate that is created itself. That is why there are certificate authorities. These third parties verify that trusted party runs sites or not. The certification authority gives its seal of approval using Digital Signature. The digital signature contains a cryptographic public key that outside computers can use to ensure that the certification authority has validated the certificate. Sites having certificates issued by a certification authority can run secure, encrypted sessions.
When a browser interacts with any site having certificate, it checks whether certificate authority issues certificate or not. If it is not, or the certificate has not validity, it will notify you about it. It is because browsers and operating system come with a pre-installed list of trusted Certificate Authorities, known as the Trusted Root CA store.
